Streamsides (continued)

Greg prepares to lift his 'Lucky Rock'

Better luck next time!

Egg rock used by multiple females

Here and there we found female Streamsides swollen with eggs, and some who had already laid eggs, looking a bit like deflated balloons.  Several of the rocks we lifted held multiples of salamanders underneath, and one in particular had sixteen.  Clearly we had made our visit at the height of breeding season, and were privileged to observe a fascinating slice of natural history.  Other than a handful of Twolined Salamanders and a few Green Frogs, the stream belonged to the Streamsides, and in walking just a short section, we found more that forty of them.

Our time with Streamsides was over, but we still had some night work to do, covered in The Night The Maculatum Danced journal entry.
