Kansas Herping (continued)

Rana blairi

Pseudacris triseriata

Don scores a turtle

Chrysemys picta belli

Bufo woodhousii

Bearing flashlights and headlamps and cameras, we set out in search of the calling anurans.  Not far away was a small cattle tank, and as we came close, we heard Grey Treefrogs (Hyla versicolor) calling as well, and found a number of them calling on the ground near the water.  Also present but not calling were a Plains Leopard Frogs (Rana blairi).

Reaching the banks of the pond, we saw a number of Woodhouse Toads (Bufo woodhousii) calling.  This was a species I had been wanting to photograph while calling, and here was my chance.

Along with the woodhousii, Chorus Frogs(Pseudacris triseriata) were also present, and I managed to photograph a few males as they called from the shallow water.  Among all the frog activity, Don found a hatchling Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta belli) on the pond bottom.

The wind kicked up strong ripples on the pond's surface, but the frogs and toads hardly seemed to notice.  Wading around in ponds and swamps at night to photograph calling anurans is one of my favorite herping activities, and I was pleased and surprised to have the opportunity on this trip.
