Day One (continued)- Snakes at the Lake

Jeff shows off the Milk Snake

Back into the vehicles and we headed to a small reservoir a short distance away.  New territory for all of us.  Jeff and Dav scared up a small Northern Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) along the rocky shoreline.  For some of the guys from Illinois this was their first sipedon sipedon - we generally run into the Midland (sipedon pleuralis) back home.

There were a number of stumps along the shoreline, and each contained a Collared Lizard, most of which allowed us to approach fairly closely for photographs.  Perhaps the extra elevation made them more confident, or perhaps they were just used to all the fishermen that frequent the lake.  At any rate, we had some fun getting up close and observing them.

Just when we thought things were petering out, Jim found an absolutely stunning Milk Snake in a small rock pile. Another 'genspila' intergrade - wow!

Of course this renewed an interest in rock lifting and snake spotting, but we only managed to add a few more Prairie Ringnecks.  We were all ready for some liquids and lunch was way overdue, so we headed to the nearest town to refuel and regroup.
