Cricket Frog Variations (continued) |

A well-camouflaged frog |
In addition to using patterns to break up their silhouettes, these frogs also can use color to blend in with their backgrounds. While canoeing along the Cache River in October of 2000, I was able to spot and photograph a number of Cricket Frogs on a muddy bank. Several of the frogs blended in very well with the mud they were perched on, while others showed more typical patterns. Can these frogs change colors to match their surroundings? I wonder. I have seen them darken considerably under the stress of capture, but they still seem to retain their patterns. Unfortunately, I didn't have all day to watch these frogs in case they turned color! In another fairly common color pattern there is a rusty-red to orange color mid-dorsally. This pattern does not obscure the 'triangle' pattern between the eyes, but flows around it, so to speak. This differs from some of the 'unicolored' frogs, where the triangle is often difficult to spot.
