Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Bird-Voiced Treefrog
Hyla avivoca

Union Co., Illinois. May 1996.

The frog chorus in La Rue Scatters, any night in May or June.  Green Treefrogs dominate with their overlapping rounds of queenk queenk; the banjo plucks of Green Frogs, the Bullfrog's throaty bellow, Grey Treefrogs from up in the willows and tupelos, and somewhere out there in the dark, ten feet or a hundred yards away, a lone Bird-Voiced calls.  seep-seep-seep it goes.

A creature of wooded swamps, avivoca is now protected in Illinois, where it occurs in a few of the southern counties where its habitat is preserved.
