Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Longtailed Salamander
Eurycea longicauda longicauda

 Union Co., Illinois. October 1977.

Most of the Longtails I have seen are a lemon yellow color; the ones I run across in central Indiana are an orange color, almost matching that of the Cave Salamander.  They can be very common in some areas, and an occasional find in other places. They seem to prefer rocky streambeds, caves and crevices, although I have found plenty up in the woods under logs and leaf litter.

To the left is an Indiana specimen; below is a Longtail from Kentucky.
