Herpetofauna: One Life's List

Bufo cognatus
Great Plains Toad

Cochise Co., Arizona
August 3, 2000

Out in the flats west of the Chiricahuas we drove one night, chasing thunderstorms and watching the roads for herp life.  Pulling into a lonely filling station out in the middle of nowhere, we found a number of these toads hopping about the parking lot under the lights.  Their mottled dorsums are beautiful, and their overall appearance utterly charming.

The bottom toad was found in a motel parking lot, making a living off the bugs attracted to the lights on the premises.
