Herpetofauna: One Life's List

Pseudacris crucifer
Spring Peeper

Union Co., Illinois
Spring 1983

It's funny - after early spring, these little frogs disappear. After their breeding season is over, they are hard to find.  Where do they go?  I thought it was just me, until I read Lazell's This Broken Archipelago, where he notes the same phenomenon 'way over on Cape Cod.

Formerly in the genus Hyla with the other treefrogs but now in Pseudacris, these small hylid frogs can sometimes be found past spring hiding in the leaf litter in moist woodland habitat.
