Coluber constrictor helvigularis Liberty Co. Florida. April 25, 2003 Finding a BrownChin on cold rainy day in the Applachicola was a pleasant surprise. The snake was huddled under a short section of log, the only snake found on our first visit to the Apalachicola National Forest. Some folks think helvigularis isn't really a legitimate subspecies, but I'll go along with it - it looks different, at any rate. More on this snake in The Why of a Brown Chin in the Notes From The Field section.
