Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Texas Horned Lizard
Phrynosoma cornutum

Dragoon Mts., Arizona - August 4, 2000

It was a night where we hit pay-dirt, cruising the blacktop roads; we drove through the thunderstorms that are a part of the Arizona monsoon season, and reptile life was out in abundance.  We stopped to detain this little lizard and photograph it by the roadside.  It was our second species of Phrynosoma in two days, a humdrum event to desert dwellers, perhaps, but exciting enough for a midwesterner like myself.  I like the coloration of cornutum better than solare (Regal Horned Lizard) but I find the Regal's spine set more impressive looking.
