Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Northern Fence Lizard
Sceloporus undulatus hyacinthinus

Franklin Co., Missouri.  Spring 1975

It is hard to get away from Fence Lizards.  No matter where I've gone herping in this country, a sceloporid of some type always seems to show up.  I had 'Blue Bellies' living on the backyard fence when I was a lad, so these lizards and I go way back.  I enjoy visiting some rocky, sunny place in mid to late summer, when the young Fence Lizards have hatched and are scampering about in numbers. They are fun to watch.

At left is a southern Illinois specimen.
