Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Southeastern Five-Lined Skink
Eumeces inexpectatus

Wakulla Co., Florida.  March 22, 2006

You have to grab up these lizards to make a correct identification - they look a lot like Five Lined Skinks.  The defining difference lies in the scales underneath the tail; inexpectatus has scales of uniform size, while Eumeces fasciatus has a row of wide scales down the middle.

This lizard was hiding under a plank, and I was able to grab it after taking its picture and check the underside of the tail.  I've probably seen a number of these skinks over the years, but this was the first one I had gotten my hands on.
