Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Sixlined Racerunner
Cnemidophorus sexlineatus sexlineatus

Rockingham, North Carolina. May 23, 1998.

This Racerunner has a wide range east of the Mississippi and south of Mason-Dixon. They prefer open areas with loose, well-drained soil - my first was found in an area of dry, sandy pine flatwoods in North Carolina. The top photo is of a male from this area.  The undersides of the males are typically washed with blue.

Driving on backroads in the Carolinas during the heat of the day, these lizards would scurry aross the road in front of the car, quickening pulses for a few seconds!
