Herpetofauna - One Life's List

Southern Fence Lizard
Sceloporus undulatus undulatus

Jasper Co., South Carolina.  May 26th, 1998.

On a piece of deserted property, we found a remnant of a fallen oak tree that proved to be home base for a half dozen of these lizards. We chased them from one side of the tree to the next, the lizards always remining one step ahead.  This one finally sat still long enough for me to take a picture.

Any rotting log the sun can reach is a likely home for these lizards. They eat the insects attracted to the decaying wood.
