Midwest Worm Snake
Carphophis amoenus helenae

La Rue-Pine Hills, Union Co., Illinois.  May 1978.

During times after heavy rains, Worm Snakes can be found in number under logs, rocks, pieces of tin, and other material.  They tend to disappear underground during dry weather.  The two helenae featured here were found near Heron Pond in Johnson Co., Illinois.  The top snake is somewhat opaque and close to shedding, while the bottom snake shows the typical (and darker) dorsal color.
