Copperbelly Water Snake
Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta

Southern Illinois.  September 26, 2003

In all probability, this snake is a neglecta-flavigaster intergrade, but since it looks like a neglecta, and because the status of neglecta in southern Illinois is up in the air, I think I'll call it a Copperbelly until someone proves otherwise.

I've seen a number of these copper-bellied snakes in this same location, and have encountered the same large female twice in successive years.
