Eastern Cottonmouth
Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus

Rockingham, North Carolina. May 22, 1998.

I spotted a large Eastern Cottonmouth in a drainage ditch, but the steep sides prevented us from getting any closer to the snake and after a time it went swam away into some dense undergrowth and was lost. A shame too,  I really wanted to examine it up close, and make a comparison between it and the Western Cottonmouth (leucostoma) with which I am familiar.
