Kansas Herping (continued) |

Up the hills and down the hills, but mostly we went along the hills, working the layers of exposed rock. One large rock yielded a pair of adult Western Massasaugas (Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus). It was mating season for Massasaugas, and these two were likely together for that reason. More Box Turtles, Lined Snakes, Horned Lizards and Collared Lizards turned up as we went along through the afternoon. All the little groups were to meet up at a specified time, to see what had been found and to move to a nearby Boy Scout camp for supper. Among the many finds, someone had found a Graham's Crayfish Snake (Regina grahamii) along a small creek. There was time before supper to get some herping in, and we worked along a wooded creek valley, and turning up a number of new species. I found a Texas Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi texanum) and we also found an adult Black Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoleta) in a junk pile. Under rocks above the creek bed we found a beautiful Red-sided Garter Snake, and another splendid Speckled King.
